Can students have their own credit card in the Philippines?

Can students have their own credit card in the Philippines?
If possible, what bank? They should be the principal holder and not just supplementary. Im a college student andI need to get one soon please hep.

hindi pwede,, kasi baka gastusin lng ng gastusin ng bata ung pera ng mga magulang. if your parents are real far from you, i think they should give you one, but don't abuse it! ok???
2 :
In order to be given a credit card where you are the principal card holder, the issuing bank needs to see proof of income, the most common evidence for which would be the income tax return (ITR). If you can produce these documents even if you're still a student, most banks will issue a credit card to you. In the application form, banks will also ask you questions about your ownership of property (vehicles, house, etc.). This isn't like the US where credit-card companies issue cards to students.
3 :
You might try Equitable PCI or CitiBank. Be careful though as credit cards can become a trap. Credit cards can entice you to spend money on things that aren't needs. Remember you have to pay everything back that you borrow with interest.

If you are looking for a nice yet affordable place for your out-of-town seminar that you can enjoy after the seminar then I would recommend the natural paradise of Davao City-the Garden of Eden. You will surely love this place. You will experience the true paradisiacal fresh air, peace, tranquility, and true re-creation. This is one of the nicest places where I brought my relatives from States and they love it. Please click the following for further information: http://www.edennaturepark.com.ph/

Well, I suggest that you have to be in Cavite or Tagaytay for your seminar. The place there is very cozy and cool with the scenic spots to view. And, you can enjoy fully because of its .....cool venue and foods.

How do you use financial aid or FAFSA in the philippines? I heard that Fatima University accepts Financial Aid but they are not specific if the nursing students are qualified to use it.. please help me. i am planning to go there this june 2009, i hope to get answers as soon as possible..thank you..

You need to work with the school to determine your eligibility for financial aid while studying there. You can also check with the Dept. of Education here in the US by calling 1-800-4FedAid. For advice on completing the FAFSA, visit www.FAFSAonline.com or you can complete the form on the government's site www.fafsa.ed.gov If you do qualify, typically you can only get federal financial aid in the form of federal student loans. Other federal aid programs are not available. You may also qualify for private student loans ( www.privatestudentloans.com ) but those are harder to get.

Philippines: Any La Salle Student in here or any alumni?!?
I am having this research paper in one of my major in Education and I was tasked to get an information regarding with some information about your school. So, kindly help me out. Hi. I'm a BS-Civil engineering student in La Salle Taft .Presently I'm taking my OJT and I'll be graduating a few months from now. I started in la salle at 2005 and our tuition fee for our freshman year didn't go below 50,000 pesos because the laboratory fees jacked up the price. The expenses receded until it was approximately 35k-40k in my 3rd and 4th year. This term I'm only paying 11,546 pesos since the OJT is just 2 units. These days I've heard the tuition for an engineering freshman is around 75k pesos. It might be false so you need to double check. I don't know what you mean by reasons for the tuition fee. If you ask me I think the price is unreasonable since DLSU only has 4 school days a week now. Anyway, to show you in detail, here's my entire assessment for this term: Tuition------------------------------------- 4,660.00 Miscellaneous--------------------------- 5,355.00 Trimestral Reg652.00 Student Services930.00 Athletics562.00 Stud Mat'ls & Forms131.00 Medical/Dental317.00 Library1,947.00 Museum Fee15.00 Infomation and Comm737.00 Insurance64.00 Special Fees-------------------------------- 450.00 P. If you have anymore questions, here is DLSU's landline: (02)5244611. Have the operator connect you to the registrar. They know everything you need to know for your paper.Good luck!

What percentage of college students in the Philippines study nursing?

What percentage of college students in the Philippines study nursing?
I asked this question out of curiosity because it seems that half of my high school class all took up nursing. So, does anybody here have any data to help me on this? I've tried googling but the results I'm getting are all about PRC's board exam results. I wouldn't have asked here if I were looking for the percentage of board passers because that's very easy to find. F*CK OFF pinoykurakot

You will probably have a much better change if you look for the board passers rather than nursing school takers.
2 :
99.9%
3 :
That's not new. You already said that half of your school class are taking up nursing. You really don't need to search for the answer and find your hypothesis true in the end since it is very obvious that many Filipinos would like to take up nursing and hoping that one day they would go abroad and establish a life that they think they would never get here by working as a local nurse. But the downside of it is the govt has been pushing this nursing program for years thus making the job market limited since there are so many nursing graduates. Some nursing graduates who even passed the board exam are desperate to find a job and because of this they end up working as call center agents or as assistants in a small clinic.
4 :
cannot find actual % but your observations is correct. i found this 3-yr old news article. it seems DepEd officials are really worried too many students taking nursing (hopeful they can work abroad) that a new pre-college testing will be implemented. http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/gen/2006/11/18/news/education.dep.t.to.control.rising.number.of.nursing.students.html

What happens if I get a student loan here in the States and then decide to transfer overseas ?
I want to study at the Western Visayas State University in Iloilo, Philippines, but no bank wants to give me a student loan to do that. What would happen if I enrolled at a university or college here in the States and then transferred over to the Philippines? Would I have to start paying off the student loan immediately or would I be allowed to wait until I finished my schooling in the Philippines first?
Financial Aid - 1 Answers

If you did a semester in the US and paid for that with student loans, then you wouldn't be required to start repaying until you were done with school no matter where you go. But, that student loan you take out would not transfer oversees with you unless you were studying abroad through a US university. Your student loan is paid to the school and any extra is distributed to you. If you withdraw from all of your classes to go oversees you would have to give that money back so I don't understand how going to a US university would help you.

Do you think the culture of private schools in the Philippines affect the students' love for their country?

Do you think the culture of private schools in the Philippines affect the students' love for their country?
The culture of private schools in the Philippines means being more western and discriminating the lower classes.
Philippines - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Unfortunately, there's a fallacy on that view. A lot of our countrymen working overseas are Westernized to some degree; however, it didn't affect their love and loyalty to the Philippines. In the school context, Filipinos were never taught about discriminate, prejudice, or apartheid.
2 :
Government schools face too many problems. The quality of education had been compromised. Imagine a class with 60 above students per class. A public school teacher teaching a lot of subjects, not just one or two but more in different levels. Imagine a student with no chair and table to sit into. No books to read.. etc..etc..etc. Can you blame parents to enroll their kids in a private school? I don't think so, enrolling your child to a school that you think can give the child quality education is not and should not be considered as "being western" and "discriminating" other kids who are in "lower classes". Private schools teach what is also taught in public schools. Their curriculum is the same as that of the public schools because they still monitored by the government. Being in private school for me has nothing to do with you being a Filipino affecting your love for the country.
3 :
if you're saying that the culture of private schools affect their love for the country, i think it would be more appropriate to say that it affects their love for their countrymen. it's not the fault of the school alone. you see, it's in everybody's nature. i think everyone has a proud side who wants to look better than anyone else. well, who the hell in this world had never felt (even for a second) that s/he is better than someone else?
4 :
sorry but i may be biased since i've always studied in private schools. here's my answer anyway: Honestly, i must admit that i've met a lot of people who put fellow filipinos down, pero wala naman sa pinagaralan yun eh, nasa kinalakihan. most of my friends in ateneo are very idealistic, everyone wanting to change the country AND ACTUALLY STAY IN IT. first of all, there's a difference saying that people are western and discriminatory because of their education or if it's because of their upbringing. i think upbringing is the answer. in fact, ateneo has so many programs that aim to make us more nationalistic. one of them is that, to be able to graduate, you have to do blue collar jobs/stay with a native community for a couple of weeks in fourth year, along with a wide array of charity and social work for the whole of your 3 years before that. but no matter what it does, hindi niya mababago ang mga ugaling kinasanayan na ng iilan. kung pinalaki kang spoiled, no school can change that.
5 :
YES, not entirely because of the schools themselves but because of their upbringing. Those who afford to study in Philippine private schools are themselves the upper and middle class descendants of illustrados, Spanish mestizos, Chinese entrepreneurs, and indigenous royalty. And we all very well know that these groups historically tended to side with the colonizers more than to the native Filipinos. Manuel Quezon to his Spanish friends: "As long as this Castilian stands (referring to himself), NO Indian Malay (a.k.a. Indio, referring to unmixed Filipinos) shall command". This has been carried over to many private schools. La Salle and Ateneo up to the 1970s were largely populated by Spanish Mestizos, as were Assumption, Poveda, Kostka, and International School Manila. Fortunately, both La Salle and Ateneo, after being "infiltrated" by indigenous Filipinos, have reinstated requirements for serving lower income families before being able to graduating. So the students do them begrudgingly. English speaking people (konyo) predominate in private schools and everyone knows that since language is based on the state of mind of a person, he is less nationalistic and thus have less love for the country. Most even have parents who tell them not to speak Filipino, "because it is the language of the katulong and the yaya" (from my classmate). I know how the culture of Private Schools create a barrier between the rich and the poor Filipinos, because I studied in Private School all my life - after my graduation from Elementary, I knew every detail of American History from Sacagawea to the Sta. Anna but I didn't know who Raha Humabon is. Now, who is still brave enough to say that Private Schools don't make nationalistic fervor down the dumps? :)

What is the best way to send money to Philippines?

What is the best way to send money to Philippines?
not western union, lbc or moneygram etc I am a student that will be studying in the Philippines soon. I have a parent with a separate Citibank account in the U.S. that automatically has funds transferred there every 2 weeks and is not linked to any automatic withdrawals or anything. Citibank though charges $8 for international transfers and $30 for wires. My question is.... Is there an automatic and cheaper method of sending money from the U.S. to a bank account (BPI,Citi,BDO) in the Philippines with any other company/bank?

You can try Western Union. You can receive the money in less than an hour. They charge minimal fee. However, get the dollar remittance, do not have them convert it to pesos since they have a low exchange rate. Go to any money exchange for the conversion of your dollars to peso. SM Malls have Western Union branches inside the mall and you can exchange your dollars at SM. Just ask the guard where their money changer is inside the department store and supermarket. This way you get your money's worth.

The cheapest and most convinient way in my experience to frequently transfer money to the overseas especialy to the South East Asia countries is by opening your a chequing account at your local HSBC account. Send the atm card to the recepient and ask them to withdraw from the local hsbc bank. The service charge are much lower compare to the transfer fund transfer fee, and also, the exchange rate HSBC uses are always always much better than those of Western Union or any other regular overseas money transfer method.
2 :
Wells Fargo does not charge for remittance to the Philippines if you have an account with them...If I recall correctly.
3 :
There are two methods that may suit your needs. The first is open a checking account and send the ATM card to the recipient. T The second method is to open a US checking account and a Philippine dollar account. You then deposit a check once a month into the Philippine account. It will take about 21 days (depending on bank) for the check to clear, but in most banks there are no charges or fees this way. Either method make sure you have some "emergency money" not dependent on the method that you can access in the Philippines.
4 :
you could try paypal
5 :
I personally do not like to rely on an ATM to get my money. There are main reasons for that. That question gets asked a lot so I wrote an a FREE eBook about called "Send Money To The Philippines." You can get it here, click on the book cover in the article: http://cebuexperience.com/living-in-the-philippines/how-to-get-your-money/ There is an article that discusses the issues as well but more is covered in the FREE eBook. The two reasons I don't like to use an ATM card are: 1. For Many It is More Expensive 2. If a Typhoon or other problem hits your locality you may be unable to access your money for days, possibly longer. Using an ATM: MOST banks are going to charge you a international transaction fee of 5%. Not long ago, I sent money with an ATM because I was lazy. After my bank charged me $5.00 for the transaction and the local ATM also charged me an amount along with the huge 5% fee, my effective exchange rate was P35 to 1USD. I heard that HSBC does charge that fee but I don't have $60,000USD to open an account at HSBC so I'll never know for sure. The banks don't always separate that fee out, so unless one actually computes the amount, they may not know. That fee is not charged by your sending bank. That is a Visa and Mastercard fee. I don't know how HSBC or credit union or anyone else could get the card companies to waive their fee just for them. Perhaps they can but I remain skeptical. Again, I don't know. If you can get an HSBC account that is probably the best way to go if you're going to use an ATM. The second reason I don't relay on an ATM is that soon after I moved to the Philippines, we had a typhoon hit and it was time for me to get some cash. It happened on my payday. The electricity and internet was down for three days. I was out of cash in hand and I was hungry. I couldn't get my money. I ran into trouble using WU because I live in the Philippines and Money Gram said I couldn't use it at al if I was no longer in the country. I don't recall what the problem with WU was but I never got it. My GF ended up taking a bus 120Km to a larger city to withdraw cash on the third day. If you're going to use that method, consider opening a credit union account if you can't get HSBC. They will usually save you money I'm still doubtful they can escape the 5% international fee. There are two good companies for setting up automatic transfers. Those are Xoom And Remit Home. With both companies you can submit directly into a Philippines bank account in Peso. You can also do it with dollars but the fees go up. Xoom is the fastest way to get your money. I give some hints my eBook on that though important hints. They are also the cheapest way I have found. Currently their rate is $5.99 for up to a transfer amount of $2999.00 Remit Home has the best customer service, well they did a year ago. That was the last time I used them because Xoom is faster and Cheaper. They fee Remit Home charges is either $8.00 or $10 per transaction. Both avoid the 5$ international transaction fee. There are many tips in my eBook. I've been sending money to the Philippines for 6 years. I almost never use an ATM. Another thing, the lines at ATMs are often long, you might be in it for an hour.

When do Universities in the Philippines (such as AUF or UP) hold their Entrance Exams?

When do Universities in the Philippines (such as AUF or UP) hold their Entrance Exams?
Hello everyone! I am a high school student currently living away from the Philippines. I was just curious when the entrance exams take place so I can go back and take it. I am interested in knowing when AUF and UP hold their exams but any other university would be okay! Not very sure if all the universities have admission test at the same time period/month. Any help would be appreciated!

at UP, exams are usually held in august but applications must be submitted by june. for the school year 2010-11, UPCAT results are already out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_the_Philippines_College_Admission_Test http://upcat.up.edu.ph/results/ sorry, i don't know what AUF is.
2 :
Hi! UP entrance exams start around the 1st or 2nd week of August, but applications are done much earlier, I think the deadline is around June. Remember, UP is one of the top tier universities in the campus and they receive around 30,000 applicants per year. I was one of them before, so the sooner you send in your application, the better. Here's the link, it also has info on foreign students http://www.up.edu.ph/content.php?r=4&c=4 As for AUF, the deadline is September but I don't know when the exams really are. Mapua (Engineering and Computer courses) - one of the earliest, around July for the exams Ateneo de Manila (Management, Business and International Studies) - exams are September UST (nursing) - August to September La Salle - September All in all, most exams would be around July - September, because this is just the start of the academic year. This way, all the seniors would have the exams out of the way and just wait for the results later on before they graduate Hope this helps! :) Good luck

Are honorariums given for the conduct of review sessions to nursing students subject to tax in the Philippines?
I conducted a series of review sessions with our nursing students in our school here in the Philippines. When I received my compensation I was surprised that the honorarium I received for being a reviewer was included in my monthly taxable income, making my tax for the month bigger than normal. Are honorariums really part of the taxable income?

Unfortunately, YES. I am also from the Philippines and do the same. I conduct seminar-workshops for book companies and even for our own school. For book companies, it does not matter because they gave it to you sans anything more than an acknowledgment receipt. In the case of in-service trainings I conduct for our school, our treasurer generously excludes my honorarium from the payroll. She enters it instead as performance bonus. Bonuses in Philippine law is non-taxable. If you can request the school to enter your honoraria as bonuses, this I think is the best you can do so they will not be subject to tax!

How to become an exchange student from the Philippines?

How to become an exchange student from the Philippines?
I'm from the Philippines and I REALLY want to go to school in a foreign country because I really have a hard time with the language even if I was born here. I find the language unimportant and I' not that interested. And I'm not full Filipino, my dad and mum both have mixed bloods and races so I don't look like Asian (and my mum is the Filipino and my dad is a foreigner) So I really want to study in a anywhere that isn't hard to get in to. (except countries in Asia, but Singapore is okay) Thanks and please no rude comments :) And I really like traveling and learning other cultures, and my lifestyle is for an American type. I have relatives from America (if they can do something but we don't have much contact with them) THANKS ONCE MORE!! God Bless :)

no shortcuts doctor wannabe! it is like connecting intestines to the stomach not to esophagus ok! do the right process because you might can get away of it right now but in the future if you finished doctor's degree PRC requirements will check your records before examination.
2 :
That depends on the school which you plan to attend. Highly competitive schools like UP or UST won't consider you at all without an NMAT, because their admissions are based upon the score which you receive. Most medical school that are less famous and private, especially outside of Metro Manila might allow you to enroll without the NMAT. In order for it to be legal, they will enroll you as a TEMPORARY, NON-DEGREE student. You will be required to take the NMAT in December, and submit it to CHED for approval. This is an arrangement you have to make with the medical school that intends to enroll you.

Everyone has to have a visa. You can get it here though at the airport. That's a tourist visa good for 21 days that can be renewed every two months. Easy. You may be required to have a student visa for the school though and I would start that at home . Call the school.

yes. schools will look for that from foreign students. go to the Bureau of Immigration and Deportation in Intramuros, Manila after you've enrolled. apply for a student visa, but i believe they'll give 6 months so you don't have to renew if you'll just be here for less than 5.
5 :
I would avoid the gov't there. They are corrupt, money grubbers who pocket the money anyway. Just pay the 25 dollar fine when you exit late. Almost all foreigners are allowed in on a renewable 21 day visa.

how to convert my wife master degree public administration in philippines to US master degree?
she gradulate in luczon state university in philippines. and she is coming to USA in 6 months. how US going to recognize her master degree in publilc Administration? her school location in lucban Quezon, philippines. she is straight A student in school. she is proffesor in the university. can she convert her degree? or take additional class? please someone can help!

It may not be equivalent to a US masters degree. She would have to contact a school and get her courses and degree assessed. Many times an MA in the PI is the equivalent of a BA plus a few credits here. You just have to send the grades (is she applying for school, or to teach?) and see what happens. You don't "convert" a degree.

Is there anyone here who tried studying abroad as exchange student?
I'm a Sophomore student at University of the Philippines Los Banos and I'm really interested in studying abroad but disappointed on the fees. Its quite expensive pala. Is there anyone here who can give me good advice about financial aid or maybe you can share what its like studying overseas?

nice back
2 :
in US if your an international student your not qualified to get financial aid and you need a co sponsor for you to be enrolled. The tuition is 3-4 times the usual amt. Example in hudson community college in New Jersey (affordable college run by the government) the tuition is $279.00 per unit for international student. You cant enrolled in a private school bec they dont allow you. I studied overseas but its not worth it w all the money you have to put up unless you have all the $$. Lucky for me i met my husband at school and we got married while i was at school and bec of that my tuition was more affordable and i was able to get loans. I wasnt qualified for financial aid bec we didnt meet the income requirements which was less than how much he made. Also studying overseas is way boring than in the Philippines. The students here are not friendly and the teachers dont really care.
3 :
The previous answer is correct. Generally, foreigners are not eligile for student aid. Foreigners may be able to apply for private grants (but that would depend on each foundation's guidelines). Otherwise, you must have the funds not only for the tuition but for your living expenses as well. The embassy will be looking for this before they issue you a study visa. good luck

I study at Stanford California, but I work nights as a care giver to pay for my studies, it is real hard though.

I'm currently looking to apply to a philippines uni after I finish grade 11. I heard that universities in the philippines accept grade 11 ontario credits because the high school system over there ends at the Canadian equivalent of grade 11. Can anyone confirm this? i believe Grade 11 (Candian) is equivalent to a senior highschool in philippines. since in Quebec, grade 11 (sec. 5) is the final year of secondary education, most of the universities in philippines will accept any final secondary education, i'm pretty sure they'll also look through your other grade level if so, probably most of them iguess. well i hope this help :-)

How can my cousin apply for a US student visa? She is from the philippines, but lives in Abu Dhabi?
I am assisting my cousin by being an official sponsor for her US student visa. All of the the Documents on my end were fine. Sent her paperwork, then she was denied in the Philippines. The interview didn't even last 3 minutes. due to lack of ties and assests. I don't understand, how can she have assests if she just starting out and a student? I've been told sometimes its due to them making the quota already. Now she lives in Abu Dhabi and currently working, but she is planning on applying from there. Is the chances of getting approved better there than in the Philippines? Any advice or expiences you would recommend to help ease the process? Do I start the same process all over again just as it was in the Philippines? Many thanks
Immigration - 2 Answers

1 :
She needs to have an acceptance from a US university. Then she needs to demonstrate that she is likely to leave the US at the end of her studies. She can apply from Abu Dhabi but the INS agents there will be more expert in the local customs etc. and, all things being equal, will be more likely to refuse a visit request than the INS agents in the Philippines.
2 :
If she was truly trying for a student visa instead of just illegally entering, her US school would've taken care of all her visa requirements.

Everyone applies for a visa on their own merits. If you want to apply for an individual tourist visa your best first step is to make contact with a real travel agency where you live that is familiar with the documentation requirements: http://www.travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1265.html As a student you may be better off visiting the USA with an organized school tour - ask at your school about options. There are two sources for student loans -- the federal government and private lenders. In order to obtain most federal student loans, you will first need to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). In most<!--instances the FAFSA is required for all federal financial aid including federal student loans. Deferment options are available while you are still attending school at least half-time. There are four main federal loan programs. http://best-loans.awardspace.com/student-loans.htm Federal loan consolidation is for students who are in repayment status or parents who wish to extend the repayment period on their current PLUS and obtain a fixed interest rate for the life of the loan-->you can combine all of your eligible federal student loans into one loan with a Federal Consolidation Loan. Consolidating also locks the interest rate you pay on your loan.

Can I be accepted as a medicine student even if I'm just only halfway through BS Biology?
i am planning to transfer school from the university of santo tomas to university of toronto i have already 97 units here in the philippines as BS Biology student, could it be credited?
Higher Education (University +) - 2 Answers

1 :
You would have to ask the University of Toronto about transferring credits. In Canada, medicine is a graduate program -- so it is unlikely you could transfer into medicine at this point.
2 :
You can't get a bachelors degree in medicine in Canada. Thus, as an undergraduate student pursuing a bachelors degree, you can't transfer into medicine in Canada - you can't transfer your credits into medicine - because medicine is really a graduate program in Canada, not an undergraduate program. Instead, you could transfer to U of T as a biology major, or another major of your choice - but not medicine. Not at the undergraduate level. However, although in Canada, medicine is a graduate program, most Canadian medical schools do accept some exceptional undergraduate students who don't yet have their undergraduate degrees, so long as they have over a certain number of undergraduate credits completed. So it's possible that you could get into medical school, if you're an extraordinary candidate and you have the right number of credits. But it's unlikely. Most Canadians get their bachelors degree first, then apply to medical school.

A few colleges in the US do the same. Quite apart from any other reasons they might have, there's the calculation for any tuition reductions or benefits assigning. How can I get a U.S. Student loan for a school in the Philippines?

How can I get a U.S. Student loan for a school in the Philippines?
I'm an American Citizen and I am entering the last year of high school. My counselors and I have already come to the decision that I am going to graduate early, because the school year in the Philippines starts in June, and schools in the U.S. ends their year in June. My family and I are also in a bit of a money struggle and this is one reason for me to study in the Philippines, due to it being cheaper. We have looked into the loans that the U.S. can give to students studying in the Philippines, but the school needs to have a federal code. It's one of the best medical schools there but they have no federal code. How can I still get a loan to be able to pay for the tuition?
Financial Aid - 0 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
If the school has no federal code it means that they are not able to accept loans from the American federal government, some schools in other countries can, some can't. This means that you are now limited to private loans. If you do not have good established credit, you will have to get someone with good established credit to co-sign for your loan. I am not sure if all banks will lend for schools abroad, mine does, but it is best to get one from the bank where you are already established.
2 :
No code, no loan. Instead of government sponsored loans, you'll either be dependent on open market loans OR you could work before you go to the Philippines, to have a buffer of money to keep you for the first year. Then you could return to US during vacs and earn again for the next session.

In order to have a successful foreign exchange student program, there has to be a registered organization in both countries and they should agree to participate in the program. Let us take Rotary Club (RC) for example. We shall have Student A (Filipino), Student B (American), RC-Philippine chapter (PC) and RC-US chapter (UC). PC will send Student A to UC and host Student B. Inversely, UC will send Student B to PC and host Student A. The opportunity to travel the host country is up to the hosting club and to the exchange student. Some clubs include the tour in their program. Sometimes the host family will take the initiative to do this. Other times the exchange student will personally fund her/ himself to see the country. Getting to know the culture of the host country and the exchange student is a wonderful opportunity. The exchange students and the host families benefit a lot from these programs.

Being a student in the Philippines ??

Being a student in the Philippines ??
Hi there, I am a Canadian living in Canada but I was wondering if anybody would recommend studying in Manila for college or university? I would like to do something in either journalism, hospitality, or teaching english. I mainly want to do this because I have a good friend who lives in Manila and this might be a way of seeing her more often. Also because I would like to start my life over new there. Please any advice would be great. I guess even info on the costs of a foreign student there would help too. Thanks...
Philippines - 9 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Living in the Philippines would be cheaper than it would be in Canada. For exact costs, way of living and processing your student visa, I recommend you contact their Embassy.
2 :
cost-wise, study in the university of the philippines.. its cheap and high-quality at the same time... generally, education is relatively cheaper in the philippines as compared to education in canada... as of now, the country is infested mostly by korean exchange students and they are very much enjoying the life... mostly because the prices of goods are low as opposed to their currency. majority of Filipinos are good people, warm and hospitable.. but the unemployment rate of the country has produced quite a number of petty crimes such as picking of pockets... ü so be careful.
3 :
You will find that Filipinos will tend to speak better english than most North Americans, so you probably will be the student of the language over there. Journalism will be an interesting course for you to take in the country, since the Philippines has the dishonor of being named the 2nd most dangerous place in the world for journalists, Number one is, of course, Iraq. Hospitality/Hotel stuff I am not sure. The Philippines is a unique and intriguing place where many extremes exist side by side. Rampant poverty alongside obscene wealth, perceived uber-morality with blatant narssicism, East and West collide, grace amid abject tactlessness. Contradictions are everywhere, which may make it a wonderfully enthralling place to "start anew".
4 :
Value-wise, studying in the Philippines would be a great idea. I would limit myself to schools with more global recognition, however (they're STILL cheaper than studying in Canada). I might suggest the University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University, and De La Salle University since they're the ones more known by employers and schools in the west. The first one costs a pittance (for you) but might be hard for you to get into since you're a foreigner. The next 2 cost around 80,000 pesos or slightly lower than 1500 USD per semester. It's good if your 'friend' can help you since the cultural and economic gap will probably demand you have more assistance (Though I wouldn't advise studying here just to see her -- unless you're planning to get married or something). Also, the technology used in the schools will probably be less than what you're used to so the studying can actually be MORE difficult. Finally, your citizenship is a commodity VERY much in demand here so be careful.
5 :
submerging yourself in another country with a totally different culture, way of life, environment and people just for the sake of getting laid by your "friend" is suicide....do your homework first before getting on that plane...
6 :
I wouldn't reccomend Manila as much as Cebu, but it is the same quality education as in Canada. Cebu is one of the best places in the Phils. you would have much of a chance of teaching english (if you wanted) in the phils. as most people speak english. Cebu City is the provincial capital of Cebu in the Philippines and is the second most important metropolitan center in the country. The city lies on the eastern shore of the island of Cebu and is the oldest city in the country, even older than the nation's capital, Manila. It is the country's main shipping hub and is home to more than 80% of the country's interisland shipping companies. Cebu is also the main hub, outside of the capital, of international flights into the country and is the most important center of commerce, trade, and industry in the Visayas and Mindanao, the southern parts of the country. It is because of this and other important aspects that Cebu City is dubbed Queen City of the South. According to the official 2000 census, it has a population of 718,821 people in 147,600 households. Cebu City is the center of a metropolitan area called Metro Cebu, which includes the cities of Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu, and Talisay. Metro Cebu has a total population of more than 2 million people. The Mactan-Cebu International Airport, located in Lapu-Lapu City is only a twenty-minute drive away from Cebu City. To the northeast of the city are Mandaue City and the town of Consolacion, to the west are Toledo City, the towns of Balamban, and Asturias, to the south are Talisay City and the town of Minglanilla. Across Mactan Strait to the east is Mactan Island where Lapu-Lapu City is located. There are heaps of universities in the Phils. just find one to suit you, ther's more than Manila
7 :
Studyig and living in the Philippines would definitely be cheaper than in Canada. But one thing I assure you, the quality of education here are within International standard. And I would not be ashamed to recommend it to any foreigner.
8 :
Recommended Schools: University of the Philippines University of Santo Tomas Ateneo de Manila De Lasalle University University of Asia Pacific
9 :
Metro Manila is one of the best places in the Philippines to get a college education. If you want a university, we have the University of the Philippines and the University of Santo Tomas. Both are affordable in terms of tuition fees and they have good professors too. There's the Ateneo University and the De LaSalle University which are both private schools so their fees are quite expensive, but they can give you the best college education so they are worth it. You can also check out the San Beda College. They all offer several college courses.
